Flight
“Flight” was commissioned by Goodman for this new tower section of the Fujitsu Headquarters designed by Leffler Simes Architects, with the work as a feature of the streetscape and building entry. Site Image undertook public art from concept to completion. Laser cut and wrought steel are principal materials. The ‘Flight’ sculptures were inspired by the the Ducks Crossing street signs and open space on the adjacent road. Further review and research showed the open space extending west and east is utilized by local ducks moving between riparian areas, and that there had been regular fatalities, and hence the signs. The sculpture aims to provide a subtle reference only to the ducks, examining the feather to pique interest and highlight the broader context of wildlife corridors through an urban precinct. The ‘flight’ concept equally refers to the substantial absence of the birds and that in coming years the signs may be redundant, and the sculptures may celebrate only their memory rather than presence.
